Day 26 – Something You Don’t Like – Fungal Grownth

Forgot to post this earlier in the week!

While my boyfriend was cooking dinner, I went to clean his room and be useful. There was a can of PBR on the dresser, a little weighty, estimated at half full. When I dumped it out in the bathroom sink, a trickle of beer came out….and a pale tentacle inverted itself from the can’s opening. I shook it, I prodded at it with another bottle…it wouldn’t come out. Was it a tissue, I wondered? No, that wouldn’t make sense. My boyfriend thought it was some kind of worm, to which I SCREAMED and hurled it at the trash, then ran away from it like it was gonna explode. In hindsight, it was probably a massive, heavy colony of fungus or mold, and the “tentacle” must’ve been its long roots.

I didn’t know what I was drawing when I started this, I was just throwing white on to a black layer. It turned out like this when I stopped, so I added the beer can. It got so late I acquired double vision.

Day 21: Something You Want – A Puppy

Adobe Photoshop CS6, Intuos4, 6 hours.

Adobe Photoshop CS6, Intuos4, 6 hours. A lot of detail in this, click to see the bigger version.

This is a fellow freelancer’s puppy, Penelope Tuesday!  You’d think a little gremlin like this would be, well, gremlin-like, but she’s very friendly and loving.  It makes me incredibly happy to look down from my desk and find her lying close to me on the carpet.  I really want a dog….ideally a Shiba Inu…but my family would never agree to one.  They used to have a farm in the Philippines, so you know how that attitude goes.  A pet is a useless animal :(  They also don’t have any firsthand experience with a good pet and how awesome that can be, they only know that these things need to eat all the time.  My uncle told me he wanted to keep a pet pig once when he was younger.  But it was such a hassle having to feed it all the time, so they just killed and ate the pig instead.

Anyway, this drawing was REALLY tough!!!!  Wrinkles are no joke, folds of skin are no joke, add to that some fur and it gives me all a headache.  But apparently a challenge I couldn’t back down from.  I leave this drawing a little frustrated, wishing it could be more like what I saw in my head, but generally happy that it is not an abomination.  The ears were also abysmally difficult.  Every single part of a french bulldog is difficult!  She was bred to be a show dog, by the way, so that hard wrinkle on her nose is a big deal.

Last night, I asked my friend what he thought about the different cropping options I did on this drawing.  He said widescreen looked good, but that the dog was too big!  So I did what he said and shrunk her down, except he was not pleased with the end result.  I post that below, for your viewing pleasure.

Day 22 – Something You Miss – Jasper

Photoshop CS6, Intuos4, 5 hours.

Photoshop CS6, Intuos4, 5 hours.

Heavy day of rendering at work, with clients in. Whenever they looked away at their cellphones or laptops, I alt+tabbed over to Photoshop and sketched away at this. Jasper’s the sweetest dog I’ve ever met! I don’t know how long this took, what with the intermittent work. 4 hours? Five?  I’m really tired.  This whole week I haven’t been sleeping well…I keep waking up for no reason, or because of some odd corporeal pain, and yesterday we didn’t leave work until 12am.  Then I had to be back there today by 10am at the latest, and work work work!  Plus deal with clients and pretend to be friendly and sociable.  I’m so not that stuff!  What’s worse, when I haven’t slept well, my English becomes terrible and the things are say are not the things I hear in my head.  It’s very frustrating!

In a way, it’s surprising that it took me this long to try and draw Jasper!

30DDC: Day 10: Favorite Candy – Gum

Only costs a single wooden nickle.

10 min. sketch, Photoshop CS6, Intuos5.

I don’t actually have a favorite candy…it wasn’t something I was raised on, and I guess in adulthood I never sought that stuff out.  I’ll eat peanut M&Ms like everyone else if it’s there, but I don’t go crazy for it.  Dark chocolate is nice too I guess…but instead I drew the steak flavored gum you can get in Curse of Monkey Island :)  It’s one of my most favorite point-and-click adventure games ever.  And finally, that bag of wooden nickles went to use!!  This would probably taste AWFUL in real life…but the thought of it makes me hungry, without fail.  Side note, I think I’m getting better at drawing my signature…haha.

Whew….that’s 4 drawings in one day.  Time to sleep!

30DDC: Day 12 – Recent Accomplishment – 2m/10:26 pace

10 minute sketch, Photoshop CS6, Intuos5.

10 minute sketch, Photoshop CS6, Intuos5.

Really kicking these out today, and yet I’m still so behind!  I mentioned in my Phoneography Post about how I went running after a very long hiatus.  It’s not just the distance of 2 miles outdoors that I’m proud of….although I AM proud, because that’s way harder than 2 miles on a treadmill.  I’m proud that my pace was at the 10:26 mark!!  When I first started running last year, my pace was an appalling 22min per mile.  That’s slower than walking speed!  But I built up my muscles and stamina, and pulled things down to 10-12min miles by the end of Fall 2012.  I’m so overly happy to see that I don’t have to start from 22 minute miles again!

30DDC: Day 14: Favorite Fairytale: The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid, written by Hans Christian Andersen. Time...hours and hours...not sure exactly how much.

The Little Mermaid, written by Hans Christian Andersen. Time…hours and hours…not sure exactly how much.

Although the Disney version is GREAT and you’ll catch me humming some of its songs at times, it’s the original Hans Christian Andersen version that I love. His stories in general are amazing because they have no morals and are completely over the top and ridiculous. But the Little Mermaid, short as it was, really stood out as something beautiful and whimsical….she danced on daggers not just for love but out of curiosity, and that curiosity about the world around her was very refreshing in a heroine.  I suppose I felt her character was a little deeper in the fairytale version…and it was one of the few times I cried while reading a book.  No bra or other princessy jewelry for her, unfortunately, because I couldn’t think up any cool things to adorn her with D:

Started drawing this one at work in black and white, added the color right before uploading (that’s my disclaimer in case you don’t like the coloring I did!).  Work in progress pic from my Instagram:

30DDC: Day 07: Favorite Movie – The Princess Bride

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Inigo Montoya, my favorite character from my favorite scene of my favorite story of True Love & High Adventure!  Playing catch up so I did this one fast-ish; about 40min. including font download time.  Digitally done in Photoshop CS6, with Intuos5.  You know, I used to think jotting down work info like that was stupid, but when I look back on old art, it’s nice to compare stats to see if I’ve improved or to see how seriously I took stuff.  This is also one of my most favorite books, but I arbitrarily chose A Song of Ice and Fire for that one.

30DDC: Day 15 – Family Picture

Day 15: Family Picture.

15min. in Photoshop CS6; Intuos5.

I fall off the wagon with this every weekend, and really, I spend more time thinking about what to draw than actually drawing!  It’s annoying that a lot of the “themes” in this challenge are favorites.  I’m an indecisive person….I like a broad range of things, the world has so much good to offer.  How the hell do you pick a favorite ANYTHING?  So I limited myself to 15 minutes for this, since yesterday was a long and tiring day.  This is a sketch of me and my older sister at the Renaissance Fair in Texas, eating turkey legs!  I’ll get back to the days I missed!

30DDC – Day 06 – Favorite Book – A Song of Ice and Fire

Cintiq12wx, Photoshop CS6, 10 hours.

A lot of time was spent on the head of the dragon…then I realized, hey, I got to get this done today.  So I started cutting corners, and voila!  Still have so much to catch up on!  My favorite book [series] is A Song of Ice And Fire.  I’m still not at speed painting level :(  My coworker let me use his Cintiq12wx, which is the smallest version in the Wacom family…and SO awesome!  I really loved using it, and the buttons on the upper left corner are incredibly useful.
